Costa Rica’s Green Season, Explained
September and October get a bad reputation. They’re Costa Rica’s “rainy season” — or as locals call it, Green Season — and a lot of travelers skip them entirely. We think that’s a mistake. Here’s what these months are actually like at Justo Perfecto, and why we look forward to them every year.
The Rain Isn’t What You Think
Most Green Season days start out clear and sunny — mornings are consistently your best window for the beach, the pool, or heading out on a tour. Rain tends to roll in during the afternoon: a couple of hours of steady rain, then it clears again, often leaving a spectacular sunset behind it. It’s a rhythm, not a washout.
The Jungle Is at Its Best
This is when the rainforest actually earns its name. Everything is green, waterfalls run at full force, and wildlife is more active than any other time of year — toucans, monkeys, and sloths are all easier to spot. If you’ve seen photos of Justo Perfecto looking impossibly lush, there’s a good chance they were taken in September or October.
You Can Still Do Everything
Surfing, white water rafting, ATV tours, ziplining, waterfall hikes, boat trips — all of it still runs during Green Season, and local guides plan around the afternoon rain as a matter of course. On the days it does pour, that’s your excuse to stay at the house: the pool and hot tub deck are covered, Rambo can put together a chef-prepared meal, and there’s nothing quite like watching a storm roll over the jungle from the deck.
